Bestselling novelist and journalist, Carl Hiaasen, will be the featured speaker at the 23rd annual Celebration of Learning on Friday, October 30, 2015.
Carl Hiaasen's novels—only slightly more outrageous than his journalism, but just—have earned him praise as one of America's finest satirical novelists. He shares true though almost unbelievable stories about the sleaze, the quirkiness—and, yes, the perseverance—that underlie life in South Florida. Hiaasen's bestselling novels include Star Island, Nature Girl, Strip Tease, and Skinny Dip. He writes a regular column for The Miami Herald, where he has worked since 1976.
Hiaasen has also published books for young readers, including Chomp, Hoot (which was awarded a Newbery Honor), and his first book for teens, Skink—No Surrender (which was nominated for the National Book Award). His newest novel for grownups, Bad Monkey (2013) is a humorous mystery about Medicare fraud, monkeys and revenge, set in the Bahamas and Key West.
Other highlights of the evening include the presentation of the Julian Sinclair Smith Award for Lifelong Learning and dinner among the stacks by Cameron Mitchell Premier Catering.
