Caregiver Comfort Care
The multi-sensory nature of food is unique: the scent from the kitchen of a cake coming out of the oven, BBQ in the summertime, the toasting of a bagel, the ‘perfume’ of chicken noodle soup simmering for hours…the list and memories are endless. This seminar, focused on caregivers, will discuss simple steps to support the quality of life of the caregiver through food (particularly ‘comfort food’), and similarly how caregivers can use comfort food to support the quality of life for their loved ones. This program will be split into two parts: the first will be an interactive discussion on ‘comfort food’ and the potential import in supporting our quality of life. We’ll discuss ways to balance time, examples of ‘comfort food’ from participants, and ideas to support the process of shopping and cooking (or even ordering if in a facility). In the second part of the program, George will prepare and serve two or three submitted recipes with a follow up discussion. George Mrus is the founder of “Culinary Comfort Care”, a program preparing special meals for hospice patients. George lives by the philosophy that everyone has a comfort food, and seeks to use those special foods to improve people’s spirits, share memories, and impact the soul. George Mrus won the 2017 Jefferson Award for his Culinary Comfort Care program. Note: Participants are encouraged to submit recipes of their own comfort foods to Healthy New Albany prior to the seminar. Shared recipes may be prepared by George during the program and/or shared via handouts with all attendees.
